they care about what you could do for them today. >> did you get a sense that this was a man who had a vision on the white house? >> i thought he was going to become a senator. even when he was running i thought he would be a better candidate for senate. he had a white background he came from a white family. here i thought he was running the wrong race when he ran against bobby rush. he has never meant to be the representative of one race. he was meant to be a bridge between different races. he deserved to lose. as a terrible candidate. >> you listen to the speech today and how are you moved by the difference?

>> when he first both he could suck the energy of the room. he was like a professor. his staff was telling them that there's a difference between a speech in front of a law school class and a campaign speech. he was this not getting that. he spent a lot of time in black churches listening to preachers. that really influenced his speaking style. the next time heard him after that was in 2004 at the heartland cafe and my jaw dropped. >> he worked for her. he wanted to go with her. >> she graduated from law school before he had.

nation. they like us face obstacles and they like us worked hard to move this country forward. here abraham lincoln surface single term in congress. john quincy adams, the only former president to return to serve in the house spoke out against slavery. today we also remember an event that took place outside of this building. the passage of the historic civil rights laws. we are honored to have witnessed a colleague, congressman john lewis was a speaker at that historic march. >> [applause] >>shows the courage and

e-mail from one of the south shore drill team members. one of the groups that we did a story on the earlier in the week. they were about $17,000 short of their goal of being able to make it. a businessman step forward and wrote the to check for 10,000. they receive a check for walgreen's and also from someone else to step up. we will have continuing coverage of the inauguration of barack obama. including the transition [music]

back to coverage of the presidential inauguration. we're joined by rich pearson. we are going through and dissecting the speech this time you were talking before we came back out about how different it was from four years ago. >> everybody talks about the grand tour, the history of the first african-american president. i think you're seeing is the president. what i think

what you saw on by many respects some of the director points he made. something that is very unusual hills are more traditionally the state of the union type items. at and what you saw here was a lack of reaching out to republicans. i think what you saw was a president who is confident of his political standing but also somebody who has been to the political wars of washington >> he did talk about the state of the union. i think in fairness he did not put any it agenda out. he talked about kids being safe. he did not talk about how you get there. if republicans are listening while they know he has to certain

things in mind, it is fair enough for them to say we will talk about that. they agree with the conceptual ideas. we just have to talk about how to get there. >> he did step back by saying whatever we do here is going to be imperfect. that was kind of >> and as for the following generations to strive towards the perfect. >> when you go back to that speech four years ago even then he did reach out a little bit too republicans saying that in this grand door that we all looked at week proclaimed an end to the petty grievances and false promises of incrimination and worn out dog must that for far too long and strength of our politics. have strangled our politics. >> he has been there for years

in the white house. he has been a part of a struggle to try to get any part of his agenda pushed forward. if it does nothing more than make a realist out of the president so that now going into his last four years you know you can get through and you know you probably can't. in some cases might be able to get through. >> i do not think he is necessarily going to pick his fights. >> recognizing the fact that the affirmation of being reelected you still have divided government. there is a very limited amount of time for him to be able to move fourth with an agenda. the republicans cannot be able to be an obstacle

not only the birthday of martin luther king jr. but it is also the second inauguration of the first african american president. it is a significant and symbolic day for all who gathered here. if >> it is the perfect storm of social justice. >> hundred together today to celebrate this day that many call monumental. >> all of our ancestors who worked so hard to make a day like this possible. >> possible for her to bring her children to the museum of african-american history and know they have endless possibilities. i let them know that whatever they want to be, whatever they are dreaming they definitely have an opportunity to let their dreams come to life.

throughout the rest of the debt. day. >> former president bill clinton and jimmy carter joined the lawmakers at the capitol for president obama ceremonial swearing-in. they're the only living democrat to occupy the white house. former first lady accompanied her husband to the ceremony. during his inauguration in 1977 president carter shun the custom and walked from the capitol to the executive mansion. he was joined by mrs. carter and his three children. >> farmer president clinton was accompanied by his wife secretary of state hillary clinton. she's a former first lady and the current senior member of president obama cabinet. she is the first former first lady to serve in the presence cabinet.

chicago. we will be sending this cold air mass east and to washington. temperatures were actually little bit about the historical norm. we'll talk about that in just a moment. here in chicago, the temperature has actually been down trending throughout the day. tonight for the first time in almost two years we could have a mere zero temperature. that has not happened here since february 10, 2011. this is pretty cold there. definitely the coldest air of this winter. there twin states under advisers. the states in pink or windchill advisory's. the run into tomorrow morning. you can see some small craft warnings out east. it is pretty clear from the satellite imagery how the coal they're coming directly out of the west pattern is expanding. they're fairly cloudy

skies and moderation time. the flyers ran the mile and a lot to the west. no precipitation in washington d.c. today. the our temperatures today stands single-digit. look at the low temperatures tonight. these are thermometer readings i go down to near zero. which is really quite an accomplishment because we have no snow on the ground. typically you have to have a reflective surface to get a zero. to be pushing zero without snow on the ground is something. look at the wind chill of this afternoon. going down to 20 below zero. this is at 630 tomorrow. by the way at the moment the president put his hand on the bible it was 40 degrees in washington d.c.. mostly cloudy for those on the capitol mall. the wind chill is 34 with a south wind at 10. that

made this a bit of a mild inauguration day across the region. these are temperatures across north america. the cold air is pressing southward. with the flow blowing in from the midwest, temperatures will actually be done trending throughout the day. at this moment ist. look at these wind gusts. first time this winter we have had anything like that. 11
